Workshop overview: The Patient-Centered Outcomes Seminar Series is sponsoring a Workshop focused on the practical “how to” of patient and stakeholder engagement for those investigators interested in pursuing patient-centered research through PCORI, AHRQ, etc. Viewing patients as partners in the research process rather than research subjects is unfamiliar to some researchers, but required within many CER/PCOR funding opportunities. The presentations within this Workshop will address patient and stakeholder engagement expectations of these funding institutions, examples of past successful patient and stakeholder engagement, strategies for effectively engaging patients and stakeholders (both generally and specifically at BWH), and the various roles that patients can play in the research process.

Patient-centered outcomes research is a significant element of the Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act of 2010. It is focused on enabling patients and members of their health ecosystem, including care givers, clinicians, insurers and policy makers, to make the most informed health care decisions by providing them the highest quality scientific evidence on the effectiveness, benefits and risks of the different options available for prevention, treatment and care of a disease or condition.
The goals of the ‘Enabling Patient-Centered Outcomes Research at BWH’ workshop included:
“Strategic approaches to embracing patient-centered care and outcomes in the context of constricted resources”
